HANDKART – OUR STORY
Discover the story behind Handkart — from early sketches to handcrafted prototypes. Follow the creative journey and see how something inspired by the classic Mika evolves into something new.
HOW IT ALL STARTED – MIKA’S STORY
It all began with a small, hand-cranked retro toy car that once brought joy to several children. Years went by, but the memory of that little kart stayed alive. When those children grew up and had their own kids, the same toy was found again — and came back to life. That rediscovery became the spark for something new — something that combines the warmth of childhood with modern craftsmanship. This is how the idea of Handkart was born.

INSPIRATION & RESTORATION
Mika was once a popular hand-cranked mini kart — simple, clever, and built to last. Though it’s no longer made, its spirit remained. When one of these toys was rediscovered years later, its restoration began — not only in form, but in meaning. That moment sparked a new journey: to create a modern handmade toy that carries the same sense of joy and genuine movement.
THE BIRTH OF HANDKART
Handkart is inspired by Mika, but it’s not a copy — it’s an evolution. Today’s Handkart blends the simplicity of childhood with the quality of modern handmade design. It’s created for children whose parents value real play and movement powered by their own hands. Every Handkart carries its own story — full of character, authenticity, and built to last.
DESIGN & MATERIALS
The design of Handkart is a combination of the old and the new. Right now, work is in progress to refine its form and technical details. Every part is assembled by hand, using as many natural and renewable materials as possible. Our goal is not mass production, but a small number of carefully made crafts — each one shaped by both material and human touch.
LOOKING AHEAD – EIS SUPPORT & FUTURE PLANS
Although Handkart is still under development, we already see the joy and inspiration it brings. The goal is to create a working prototype that will be tested and refined in real play situations with real children. The development project is supported by the Estonian Business and Innovation Agency (EIS) and the European Regional Development Fund, which enables us to explore different materials and production methods. In the future, Handkart will be available in limited pre-order quantities — ensuring each piece retains its handcrafted value and uniqueness.
